29% Giles 202 UL 76” Span. Where to begin………how about, “wow”. We tested the first proto-type with a Brison 2.4 (40cc) gas engine. We used JR digital servos, and standard Nicad batteries for both the receiver and ignition. The model took about 10 hours to assemble. Let’s cut to the chase….weight is always the topic of discussion when it comes to this type of plane. The production sample, built as stated above, ready-to-fly weight on a UPS digital scale minus fuel…..10.9 LBS!!!!!! OK…some will ask, how? Answer, the construction techniques. The largest weight savings was in the landing gear assembly and support. The landing gear on this model is made up of carbon fiber tubes, sleeved into carbon fiber sleeves, triple bearing supported inside of the fuselage. No need for heavy aluminum or the slightly lighter alternative, composite gear. Best of all, no need for the heavy plywood landing gear plates. Check out the Giles product page for detailed pics. The next significant weight savings was in the canopy / hatch assembly. This assembly is blown-molded, and painted to match. One piece, no wood or foam….other than the formers. Simple and VERY light. I could go on and on. We have the second production sample ready-to-fly with an OS 1.60FX….all up dry weight 10.4 LBS. The plane flies awesome! We expect them to arrive in the middle to end of May.
